Manchester United and Man City take shape
Manchester United and Man City got their Premier League campaigns underway at the weekend, as Jose Mourinho’s men beat Leicester 2-1 at Old Trafford and the champions dispatched Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates.
The start of a new English top-flight season means the return of European football is also just around the corner and the Champions League group phase draw will take place in Monaco on August 30.
Here, we take a look at which teams United and City could come up against, providing all the favourites progress through qualifying to reach the main draw.
Provisional Champions League group draw pots 2018/19
Pot 1: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Lokomotiv Moscow
Pot 2: Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma
Pot 3: Liverpool, Dinamo Kiev, Schalke, Lyon, Monaco, Salzburg, CSKA Moscow, PSV Eindhoven
Pot 4: Valencia, Viktoria Plzen, Celtic, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Dinamo Zagreb, Inter Milan, Hoffenheim
Who United could face
United will be in Pot 2 for the draw, meaning they will more than likely be handed a difficult opponent from Pot 1.
Pot 1 is made up of the Champions League holders, Europa League holders and league winners from Spain, Germany, England, Italy, France and Russia.
With English teams unable to face each other until the last eight, United will avoid City but will be drawn to face one of the following seven teams: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, PSG, Lokomotiv Moscow.
A nightmare scenario would see United drawn with Real Madrid, Monaco and Inter Milan, while a dream scenario would see the Reds put in a group with Lokomotiv Moscow, Salzburg and Viktoria Plzen.
