Uruguay, meanwhile, sent Messi’s great rival Cristiano Ronaldo home as Edinson Cavani struck twice to seal a 2-1 win over Portugal to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash.

France are expected to be at full strength after assistant coach Guy Stephan described Djibril Sidibe’s injury as a minor scare.

Another full-back, Benjamin Mendy, had suffered a thigh muscle problem but “he will resume his activity [on Monday]”, said Stephan.

Uruguay’s hero against Portugal, Edinson Cavani, is an injury doubt after limping off against Portugal.
