Kylian Mbappe scored two goals as France saw off World Cup 2018 hosts Russia 3-1 in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

PSG forward Mbappe opened the scoring after a fine through-ball from Paul Pogba, and the Manchester United midfielder netted the goal of the game with a fine free-kick to double France’s lead soon after the break.

Fyodor Smolov gave a limited Russia team hope with a back-post finish with 22 minutes remaining, but Mbappe made sure of the result as his low effort squirmed underneath Andrey Lunyov’s legs after 83 minutes.

The result was much-needed for Didier Deschamps’ side, who fell to a shock 3-2 home defeat to Colombia on Friday having led by two goals early on.
